Imagine walking along the shoreline at your favorite beach, with the waves lapping at your ankles and sand squishing between your toes. Serene, peaceful, calm, relaxing are a few of the words that describe this scene, right? There may be a scientific reason behind this sensation, and it has to do with your bare feet!
If you were to shuffle your feet on the carpet and then pet your dog, you are likely to give (and receive) a good shock! However, there would be no shock if you were to shuffle your feet along the grass in your back yard before giving Fido an ear scratch! This is because of the grounding effect of the earth, which zeroes out the electrical charge that would otherwise cause you to shock your poor pup!
Connection to the earth is a very important health practice that is not typically prescribed by doctors, but it has been said to reduce chronic inflammation and pain, improve sleep, increase energy, reduce stress, speed up recovery and healing, and support adrenal health. This is done by defusing excess positive electrons in the form of free radicals that accumulate in the body, especially with all of the electronic devices that we are constantly attached to these days. “Earthing”, or “grounding” can off-set the consequences of exposure to potentially disruptive fields like electromagnetic pollution or “dirty electricity”.
If you think about your typical day, how many times do your bare feet touch the earth? Most of the time, we are either walking around indoors, or have shoes on when we do go outside. This creates a barrier, and does not allow grounding to take place, so we are not on the same electrical potential as the earth. Being “one with nature” is not just for tree huggers! Our bodies are made to be in contact with the earth on a regular basis, but shoes, asphalt, wood, and rugs are preventing that from happening.
This may be the easiest, safest, cheapest form of antioxidant there is, because all it involves is removing your shoes, and placing your bare feet on the earth, whether it be dirt, grass, sand, or rock. You could also sleep on the ground, but just going for a walk or simply standing for a while will do the trick. When you ground to the electron-enriched earth, negative-charged free electrons permeate your body and equalize it to the same electric energy level as the earth.
There are also special earthing shoes and mats that provide the same effect, which may be helpful in the colder months when running around barefoot may not be practical. However, with Spring right around the corner, the best thing you can do is just step outside (without shoes) and connect with nature for your health!
